Some Canadian schools may be recognized. Foreign schooled applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy. The PT program must provide at least 120 semester hours of college-level instruction, at least 60 semester hours of professional (PT) education and at least 50 semester hours of general education. if you have a PT or PTA degree from an unaccredited program in the U.S. or territory, or from a program outside of the U.S., you must submit the following item. 1. Educational evaluation is done by a board-approved credentialing agency. The evaluation must be done specifically for Texas, not for any other state. A credentialer will determine whether the degree you received is substantially equivalent to an entry-level degree in physical therapy granted by CAPTE accredited programs in the U.S. and whether you meet other specific requirements established by rule. For the complete description of the requirements, go to section 329.5(h) of the Board’s rules.

Jurisprudence exam for all. All foreign-trained applicants must take the English tests and make the scores required by the Board. There are no exceptions or exemptions from the requirement that you take the tests. For foreign graduates English proficiency:
Depending on your visa status, you may need to go through a prescreening process as required by the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly INS) before applying for a license in Texas. To determine whether you need to get a “health care worker certificate,” contact your attorney, or check the DHS website. if you need this certificate, the board will accept certificates from either the Foreign Credentialing Commission on Physical Therapy (FCCPT), or the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). |
Your degree must be equivalent to a 4-year, an entry-level degree in PT degree as awarded by regionally accredited universities in the U.S. The school from which you received your degree must be recognized formally by the country's Ministry of Education or the equivalent. You must have made a grade of "C"/pass or above in all general and professional courses. You must have 60 general education hours (including courses in biological, social and physical sciences) You must have 72 professional education hours. You must have 8-15 hours of clinical education. Your coursework must meet the criteria of the Board's evaluations checklist. You must be licensed to practice in the country in which you received your education if PTs are licensed in that country. |

Graduation from a CAPTE Accredited program ONLY deficiencies in humanities, social sciences and liberal arts may be made up at any college or university. if the individual is deficient in anything else they must matriculate back into a college or university and get a degree in physical therapy. AFTER the education meets the accredited requirement s, the individual may apply for examination/ licensure by submitting a completed application with the application fee (please note the web ABC page where it says "July 1, 2003 application fee increase" as all applications are not yet updated), have FCCPT submit an original copy of the evaluation report and original transcripts documenting any deficiencies.
